Microenterprise Development Training Program

The Acadiana Regional Development District is taking applications for low to moderate income individuals interested in the Microenterprise Development Training Program. These workshops and seminars are FREE to eligible applicants and are made possible from funding through Louisiana Economic Development.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The family may receive FITAP, KCSP payments, free/ reduced school lunch, food stamps, Medicaid, or LAChip. If family does not receive any of these services, they may still qualify.
  • Parent or legal guardian caring for at least one minor child. A minor child is an individual who 1.) Has not turned 18 years of age; or 2.) Has not turned 19 years of age and is a full time student in a secondary school or in the equivalent of vocational or technical training; or 3.) A pregnant woman.
  • Must be financially eligible for TANF services, income less than 200% based on 2008 Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • A citizen of the United States; or a non-citizen who meets the TANF-eligible citizen criteria (such as Cuban/ Haitian entrants, amerasians, lawful permanent residents, etc.)
  • Must be willing to complete up to 18 months of training classes and start a savings program.

Training Classes Offered

  • Personal Effectiveness Training (minimum of 6 hours): gives you a detailed view of what it takes to start and operate a business, focusing on those personal qualities and behaviors that are key to success and surviving in today’s economy. Common themes area: building self esteem and confidence, goal setting, time and anger management, communication and personal appearance.
  • Economic Literacy Training (minimum of 9 hours): teaches people to understand financial tools and systems as basic as credit, banking, taxes, budgeting and networking skills. Building business assets, developing savings plans, and understanding home ownership will also be part of the curriculum. One-on-One credit counseling will be provided through Financial literacy class.
  • Entrepreneurial Training (minimum of 30 hours): covers the range of topics entrepreneurs need to know to start a business, such as taking a business idea to a business plan, building knowledge and skills including: market analysis, cost and pricing, marketing, record keeping, and financing. Assessments and screening procedures will be done to determine the feasibility of the business and if the client is ready for self employment.

Upon completion of the Louisiana Economic Development Microenterprise Development Program training and completing a comprehensive Business Plan and Cash Flow, individuals may be eligible to participate in an Entrepreneur Individual Development Account (IDA) program, funds permitting.
